PHILIP’S PERSONAL EXPERIENCE
My parents divorce happened when I was in high school. This had a big impact on me, but I saw it have an even bigger impact on my mother. The divorce was very difficult for her. There were so many emotions tied to the annulment of her 20-year marriage. She had many financial questions that went unanswered, and she was not in the frame of mind at the time to get a clear understanding on her own. My mom hadn’t considered where she would live, (my dad stayed in the family home), or how she would keep up with her standard of living. She was a school teacher whom at the time was paid under $30,000 annually. The divorce was quick, around 60 days. During that time, she was able to move into the basement of a family from our church until she figured out her next step. Most of the assets she received in the divorce were qualified assets (splitting of the 401k) and she was not aware of the 72T option giving her access to some of those funds without a penalty.
I often think back to that time and how things could have gone differently if she would have made some additional financial considerations, had someone with financial knowl- edge guiding her through the splitting of asset process, someone helping her budget and think about alternatives to keep up her standard of living, someone to hold her hand through that process and give her confidence in her finances as she tried her best to work through her emotions and get to her next chapter. This is why I decided to get my CDFA (Certified Divorce Financial Analyst) accreditation. I wanted to become an expert in helping individuals navigate this process, to educate them on their options, and help them create a plan for future success. As a product of divorce, I can tell you firsthand that it is difficult in so many ways, especially if you feel like you are going through it alone. Having a trusted professional to walk you through the financial aspects of your divorce can be invaluable.
You have been kind enough to read this part of my story, I would love to hear yours.
